Does a high volume of possession in opponents halves result in more points? – NRL Round 14 2020 stats and trends

On Saturday, the Storm defeated the Bulldogs 41-10 at Sunshine Coast Stadium. Perusing the stats, I noticed that the Bulldogs actually had more possession in their opponents 20 metre area than the Storm, with 38 play the balls inside 20 compared to Melbourne’s 28. Yet they were outscored by 30 points. This made me wonder if how strong the connection was with the amount of possessions inside an opponents half with the number of points scored. To do this we will look at where teams are playing the ball and if that correlates to points being scored. As usual, I’m...

Are the Broncos just bad, or historically bad? – NRL Round 12 2020 stats and trends

Given how historically bad Brisbane has been this season (see below), and being an unbiased New South Welshman who supports the Eels and isn’t at all adverse to sticking the boot in continually, I thought I‘d have a look to see if Anthony Seibold was at the helm of a significant season in NRL history or just a regular bad one. To do so, I wanted to plot average margin against average run metres by coach and season from 2014-2020. Using the Eye Test™, we’ve seen Brisbane repeatedly demolished through the middle of the field and be unable to return...

Are performance issues under short turn around times a myth? NRL Round 11 2020 stats and trends

There was some talk recently on NRL twitter about short turn around times after Ricky Stuart mentioned about having only five days between games. The question raised was if there was any data to back up claims that they have a negative effect on performance. Turns out there was quite a bit. NRL Fanalytics has previously posted a fantastic chart that showed the win rate for teams with various days of rest from 1998-2019. Their conclusion was “The longer the rest, the lesser the home ground advantage”. The chart also shows that there is practically no difference in win percentage...

First half advanced statistic leaders for NRL season 2023

Origin fever is hitting peak levels this week (although apparently not in Adelaide). Which means it’s the midpoint of the 2023 NRL season and as we did last year and the year before , is time for the regular roundup of the Eye Test’s advanced statistical leaders over the first half of the competition. For new readers to the site, in this post we’ll take each of the advanced metrics for rugby league that I’ve created and adjusted over the past few seasons and see which players are performing well, and for some of them, not so well. The challenge...

Just a bunch of random NRL stats

After a string of team related posts, there’s no overarching theme for this week, so lets just get straight into a bunch of random stats with no common thread other than they’re things I’ve been looking at. The Eels poor defense is masked by possession Friend of the site Mike Meehall Wood posted a fantastic piece on the Eels last week (including some Eye Test stats) so I’d suggest reading that first. Both myself and Mike noticed the huge numbers of metres per set being given up by both teams in the Parramatta v Manly clash on Friday night As...
